BSI Introduces World-First Environmental Standard for Pharmaceutical Life Cycle Reporting
BSI has launched PAS 2090:2025, a new global environmental standard designed to improve how pharmaceutical companies measure, report, and reduce the environmental impact of medicines. Supported by NHS England, the Office for Life Sciences, and the Pharmaceutical LCA Consortium, the standard aims to enhance transparency across manufacturing, supply chains, product use, and end-of-life processes.
A Framework for Consistent, High-Quality Environmental Data
PAS 2090 establishes product category rules for environmental life cycle assessments and is applicable to all pharma sectors, from generics to innovative global manufacturers. The voluntary standard accommodates organizations at different data-maturity levels and does not require primary data for activities outside operational control, making adoption more accessible across the industry.
Set to Accelerate Sector-Wide Adoption
The Pharmaceutical LCA Consortium is developing guidance, a PAS 2090-aligned LCI database with ecoinvent and Boehringer Ingelheim (due Q4 2025), and a dedicated LCA tool planned for release in November 2026. These initiatives aim to significantly lower barriers for small and mid-sized companies, enabling broader uptake of life cycle assessments and supporting the healthcare sector’s decarbonization goals.
