In a breakthrough for sustainable healthcare manufacturing, Coveris has partnered with Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) to launch the world’s first closed-loop recycling system for medical packaging. The initiative, based on SABIC’s Trucircle program, converts non-contaminated hospital waste into new sterile pouches for medical use.

Driving Circularity in Healthcare Packaging

The project began at Zuyderland Medical Centre in the Netherlands, where non-contaminated plastic waste was collected and processed into SABIC’s Trucircle PE resin. This resin was later turned into film and sterile pouches by Coveris, which supplied them to healthcare brand Artivion. The collaboration showcases how innovation and cross-industry partnerships can make circular healthcare packaging a reality.

Pioneering Sustainability Through Collaboration

Coveris’ “No Waste” vision aligns with the project’s goal of reducing healthcare industry waste and advancing recyclable packaging materials. With over 1,700 kilotonnes of non-contaminated medical waste still incinerated annually in Europe, this initiative signals a vital step toward sustainability, resource optimization, and a reduced environmental footprint in healthcare manufacturing.
