Toppan Acquires Asahi Kasei’s Brittle Lidding Technology for Sustainable Blister Packs

news

Toppan Holdings has acquired Asahi Kasei Corporation’s patented brittle lidding material technology for push-through blister packs, completing the transfer on 28 November 2025. The acquisition will enable Toppan to integrate this technology with its barrier and packaging solutions, supporting a full-scale entry into the global eco-friendly blister pack market.

Driving Sustainable Packaging in Pharma
The move addresses increasing demand for aluminum-free and mono-material packaging in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, where stringent quality and barrier performance are critical. By leveraging brittle lidding technology and Toppan’s GL BARRIER2 film processing, the company aims to produce sustainable, high-functionality blister packs using materials such as polypropylene (PP).

Strategic Expansion into Eco-Friendly Solutions
Toppan’s acquisition of 12 patents, including the core brittle film patent, strengthens its sustainable packaging portfolio and aligns with the group’s digital and sustainability transformation strategy. The company plans to complete development of functional, eco-friendly push-through blister packs and provide samples by the end of fiscal 2025, positioning itself as a leader in next-generation pharmaceutical packaging.
